Best Seattle Senior Portraits with Christian

Just did a really rockin’ Senior Session with Christian. He loves baseball, so we focused on that for the session, although mom wanted some good photos of him and his trumpet. Added a bit of old school jazz club feel to those.

I told him to relax and took a test exposure.

I said “Great. We can all go home now. (He laughed.) But seriously, I swear that will be the most boring photo all day.”

All he wanted when we started was a headshot for the yearbook. I started him in the outfield and had mom stand by and throw him balls just out of reach so he had to dive for them. “How’re you doing, Christian?” “Let’s do one more! Almost have it.” The rest of the day was a high energy frenzy of making sure his publisher got everything they needed for the magazine. Or the fireplace mantle. Same thing, right?

I had the wonderful opportunity to put together a movie poster for the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team (HRT). So without further ado…

The HRT saves over 80 lives every year, and they are completely volunteer. Their federal grant that pays for fuel and medical supplies was cut, so if you want it to stay that way, they need community funding.

What can I do to help?

Hello Everyone! I wanted to kick off the summer with a *bang* and there’s no better time than the 4th of July. I’d like to announce that I have a new newsletter! Never spammy, always awesome, and you can sign up on the sidebar or by telling me you want cool all the cool stuff, and I’ll make sure you get it. But next up, let’s take a look at what’s coming on the blog.

Helicopter Rescue Team: Due to budget cuts, the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team is on the verge of fading into oblivion. They are all volunteers and save about 80 lives every year. I’m helping them raise community support by creating a promotional video, so there will be a LOT of helicopter stuff on the blog coming up soon. And YOU can help them raise support by, ya know, supporting them. You can do that at www.supportthelastresort.com

Job Hunters – the Web Series: I have the fortune to be working with the amazing crew of “Job Hunters”, an independent web series about our future, where college graduates fight to the death in the arena for a chance at job placement. We just finished a week of shooting, and while I can’t share with you any details YET, let me just say, it’s going to be rock your socks awesome. You can see Season 1 online, and Season 2 will be out beginning of next year.

Weddings, weddings, and more weddings: Did you know I shoot weddings? If not, you should really check out my wedding photos. The rest of my summer is filled with beautiful weddings with wonderful couples, and you’ll see a lot more of them and their stories here on the blog. I’m also a vendor at the Bride’s Club wedding shows! If you know anyone getting married, be sure they are following my blog, or like me on facebook because I will be running specials and doing all kinds of cool wedding tips. Here’s the story behind building this image, almost a year in the making.

About this time last year, my fiance decided to make a really awesome dragon costume for my niece. Pretty cool, right?! She spent the fall making this great outfit for my then 2 year old niece for Halloween. I got this idea that I had to take a photo of her costume Godzilla style, so over the past 8 months, I’ve saved every box I got from B&H Photo. Every time I got a light stand, slider, video lights, or any other kind of large gear, I kept the box to build the city. I spent 8 hours drawing all the windows onto our skyscrapers, and with that, it was time for shooting.

I got to my brothers house and took about an hour to set everything up. It was a bit windy, so used cans inside the boxes to keep them from blowing over. I was looking for a perfect assortment of box heights to really look like a large city, and got them all perfectly placed, set up my strobe and battery pack, and when everything was set, let’s shoot GODZILLA!!

When we went to get my niece into the dragon, she curled up in a ball and said “I’M TIRED”. I know, but do you want to be a dragon? “No.” Do you want to go take a picture? “No.” Can you say Rawr? “…rawr.” Say RAWR. “Rawr.” RAWR. “RAWR.” You’re awesome! Let’s make you a dragon!

My niece has picked up a thing for taking pictures, so she took her pink camera with her, and took some pictures of me making faces at her on set. “I’ll make you a deal. You take a picture of me, then I take a picture of you. Ok?” The result? The darn cutest fiercest baby portrait ever!

I came across this interview with Toronto based portrait photographer, Chris Wahl, who takes “awkward decisive moments of people doing nothing.”

My favorite part was this exchange:
“How many good photos do you think you’ve taken?”
“Well, I hope I can count them on 2 hands.”
“Less than 10 good photographs in a 20 year career?”
“My standard of ‘good’ is REALLY high.”

I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph my best friend’s wedding. We’ve known each other since elementary school, and I couldn’t have been happier for her. I flew down to Mexico City a week early so I could get to know her future groom, and take some engagement pictures. I’m just so excited I can’t contain myself.
